So of course everyone’s real goal is to create a way of making a living that doesn’t feel like work at all, but even then, how does one balance the demands of life with the demands of work and passion?
As I write this post I am sitting in a hotel room in Istanbul. I could literally be doing any number of things right now other than writing, and yet I still have to write it…Why?
Finding a work/life balance…
Everyone must come a point where they decide what standards they will live by. They either choose their beliefs or they adopt beliefs based off of the expectations and the conditioning of others.
For example: when you decide you want to quit your cushy corporate job and become a pizza maker most everyone will call you crazy…eager to be accepted by others you might decide to continue the corporate job even though it isn’t what YOU want. (your beliefs about life are chosen for you in this example).
So assuming that you actually take the time to consider what you want your life to be like, and then you actually do something that you love then there is still another issue that you are faced with…
Where do you draw the line?
If you truly love what you are doing it can be very difficult at times to maintain other important things in your life.
Maybe your dedication to work makes it hard to visit with friends, maybe your dedication to your fitness makes it difficult to indulge in junk food and drinking with friends, maybe your dedication to your family makes it difficult to do work at all.
Balance is everything
As of today I have been traveling around Turkey and Italy for about 2 months and despite what many might believe, it hasn’t just been a 2 month long vacation. Even as I have traveled about I have set clear minimum goals for myself that I need to get done each day (and for the most part I have done well). I still write posts, still promote my content, still communicate with clients, and still do lots of other things with my site each day. Sure, I could lay on the beach all day and just read books for 2 months, but then what would happen at the end of the 2 month vacation?
At home in the US it becomes easy to just work away every single waking hour of my life writing, coaching, bettering myself, and working on MYBS…
and on the road it is just as easy to eat nothing but bad food, spend all my money, neglect my career, and just enjoy the sights and sounds of a foreign city.
There is a balance that can be found in your life where you can do fun and exciting things, yet still find time to pursue your passion and work hard to ensure that you have a better future.
You can choose to live only in the moment, enjoying each moment for exactly what it is…but eventually those moments run out and there is a good chance you’ll end up somewhere you don’t want to be.
Taking time out of my travels to write a post, speak with a client, create a video, or read a book on communication might sound kinda lame, but it ensures that I will be able to continue traveling and doing other things I love for years to come.
Balance makes things sustainable and successful. You can’t always just sow the soil, eventually you need to dig things up and eat otherwise you will starve, and you can’t just constantly reap the soil otherwise you will dig up everything and you will eventually starve.
There is a magic place in between sacrifice and indulgence that you can learn to enjoy awesome peak experiences and moments in your life, yet also appreciate and enjoy the sacrifices that you make as a required part of enjoying these moments.
I love the work I do here at MYBS and sometimes I get a little bit too focused, but I remind myself to maintain the balance in my life…to take a little bit of time out of my day to do something non work related: like cherish the amazing woman that I am with, or call my mom and ask her about her day; and even when I am on vacation I like to limit my indulgences a little bit, stay in tune with my routine, and keep things moving.
When you find your balance you will develop habits that will help you maintain the balance…it’s all part of the process.
Take a step back and look at the bigger picture and ask yourself where you are in life? Are you indulging too much, are you sacrificing everything and living in pain, or are you somewhere in between?
