Year 1 in review for MakeYourBestSelf.com

Hey everyone! Welcome to 2016. I want to personally thank each and everyone of my friends, fans, and followers for supporting MakeYourBestSelf.com, in 2015. Thanks to you my site had over 15,000 visitors, gained about 50,000 new followers on social media, and got shared, liked, re-tweeted, and +1’d multiple times. One of things that keeps me going when times are tough is hearing words of encouragement, or hearing from someone how MakeYourBestSelf.com helped them in their own life. With so many people becoming vocal about how MYBS has helped them in 2015, I  can only imagine what 2016 will bring!   Believe in yourself and anything is possible! https://t.co/h6r53D0rBQ #motivation #growthhacking #success pic.twitter.com/VWMfQDcGKv — Makeyourbestself.com (@MakeYourBstSelf) December 12, 2015   All that being said, I wanted to talk to you a little bit about what I have planned for MYBS here in 2016. I had the big goal of writing 1 post Monday-Friday each week in 2015 and I made that goal a success by creating over 300 unique posts for the entire year. While my results are impressive, I realize that at times the quality of my posts was not as good as it could have been, I realize that my writing has evolved and gotten a lot better over the course of the last year, and I realize that many posts from early in 2015 were never seen by many because of how brand new the site was. So in order to boost the quality of some of my earlier articles and in order to re-introduce some old articles with new flair and get my earlier work seen...

The top 3 fitness supplements for active guys

Lot’s of guys are trying to get fit and take care of themselves these days, but magazine articles, blogs, and even mainstream television are constantly bombarding us with the newest supplement craze. Even a trip to your local nutrition shop can be confusing, each label you see claims it is the newest and most effective supplement on the market. It is confusing, frustrating, and a little bit overwhelming to try to figure out what supplements are worth your money, but  in this article I have cut out the guess-work for you and gone straight to the point. If you are looking to get fit, shed fat, build muscle, or just look better make sure and add these three supplements into your weight training and diet plan.   1.Whey Protein.   Whey protein is one of the most tried and tested supplements of all time. Whey protein is a naturally occurring substance derived from milk products, and if you have ever seen the watery part that sits on top of a cup of yogurt then you have seen whey protein. Whey is highly bio-available (usable by the body), it is a complete protein (contains all of the essential amino acids), it is rapidly absorbed  by the body, and it has numerous positive effects associated with  its use. Lessons on living from a kitten in Turkey: warning, not for the faint of heart

Lessons on living from a kitten in Turkey: warning, not for the faint of heart

I’ve had a pretty crazy experience here in Turkey. Being isolated thousands of miles away from US soil, surrounded by people who in large don’t speak english (and that is to be expected in a foreign country). But over the last couple of days the friends I am staying with found a little kitten, or should I say the kitten found them, and we have been its care takers. This story is about the past few days, but I must warn you it isn’t all cuteness and cuddles, it ends quite sadly, but there is a powerful lesson hidden within the story.   READ ON WITH CAUTION- sad story ahead Here in Turkey, wild animals are dealt with very differently than they are back in the states. Wild cats and dogs roam the streets freely, to the extent that Istanbul created a program where people can recycle goods in exchange for animal food. (Thanks to my mom for the story) Anyway, these animals are everywhere: climbing into dumpsters, crossing the road, fighting with each other. You might think this is quite terrible, but in some ways it’s actually nice for the animals. Back in the US wild animals are caught, chipped, and either someone adopts them or they are euthanized. That means older animals that aren’t kittens or puppies are often caught and put to sleep. In Turkey animals may often roam the streets, but many people in the neighborhoods actually claim them as their own (they just don’t usually let them inside their homes). A lot of the people who live here put out scrap food or animal...
Black Bean, Quinoa and Chickpea Tabouli

Black Bean, Quinoa and Chickpea Tabouli

Tabouli is a a traditional salad which originates in Arabian and Mediterranean cultures. It is made up of bulgar, mint, parsley, chopped tomatoes and cucumbers with a light lemony vinaigrette dressing. Nowadays , with the popularity of food blogs and Pinterest, you will find unique spins on this classic salad. What I love most about the salad we are making today is that it is high in plant based protein. We are adding two types of beans and using quinoa instead of bulgar. Quinoa is a complete source of protein, meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids. The use of fresh herbs and vegetables also add great nutrients and antioxidants. This salad would pair wonderfully with grilled steak, fish and chicken entrees.   INGREDIENTS 1 c quinoa, dry 1 can black beans, drained 1 can chickpeas, drained 2 roma tomatoes, finely chopped 1/2 c red onion, finely chopped 1 large handful of parsley, finely chopped 4 large mint leaves, finely chopped 4 kale leaves, stems removed, finely chopped juice of 1 lemon 1/2 c olive oil sea salt and black pepper to taste DIRECTIONS Cook quinoa according to package and allow to cool in refrigerator In a large mixing bowl, combine olive oil and lemon juice. Whisk well. Combine kale, parsley and mint with olive oil and lemon mixture and toss to coat. This helps to tenderize the kale and meld the flavors while you prepare the other ingredients. Add tomatoes, onion, chickpeas and black beans to mixture. Stir. Add chilled quinoa and season liberally with salt and pepper. Stir and chill until serving. Yields 6, 1...
Do opposites attract: should you date someone very different from yourself?

Do opposites attract: should you date someone very different from yourself?

People often say that opposites attract, but attraction doesn’t automatically imply compatibility or optimal health. Lots of times we are attracted to things without them being inherently good for us, take for instance, our attraction to gossip, junk food, inactivity, and quick money: the attraction is certainly very real, but the benefits can be fleeting without the right work ethic to back it up. So what is the potential allure to someone very different than ourselves, and what are the dangers and potential benefits of being with someone totally different from ourselves?  From my own personal experience, I can tell you being with someone that is your opposite can be a challenging and highly rewarding experience for both people.   The benefits of being with someone totally different than you.   Increased attraction. Many times we are attracted to people very different from ourselves simply because of the excitement of something new and different. People that are very different from us awaken new possibilities and experiences within our lives, and that can bring a lot of excitement with it. Someone different from us also peaks our curiosity, or rather, it challenges us to learn something new, and challenge inherently awakens a primal urge to figure things out over time. Many times someone different from what we are accustomed to physically is very exciting as well. A different shade of skin color, a different body proportion, or a different set of facial features can all produce a strong attraction for someone.   Opportunity for huge personal growth. Being with someone totally different than you brings new worlds to life right...
35 fun and unconventional ways to get more exercise.

35 fun and unconventional ways to get more exercise.

Want to get more fit, but hate lifting weights, running, and hitting the treadmill?   Seriously, it can be tough committing to working out, especially when you hate what you are doing to get fit, so finding ways to enjoy what you are doing is a great way to improve your health and fitness level.   Read our list of 35 fun and unconventional ways to get fit and get more exercise!   Go for a hike. Hiking is a great workout, not only do you have to walk up hills, put in good mileage, and sometimes navigate difficult terrain, but you get a great view at the same time.  Head out to your local park, nature refuge, or walking trail and see what is out there!   Play disc golf Disc golf is a lot like golf, except you use a frisbee instead of hitting a ball.  When playing a game of disc golf, you will spend time walking, and you will use energy throwing your discs at the basket in front of you.  Disc golf is incredibly fun and challenges you to make improvement in your technique which only adds to the reward you feel at the end of a game.   Play ultimate frisbee We used to play ultimate frisbee each Friday as our cross country practice for the day, and I can honestly say I got more tired playing frisbee then I did from running some days.  In ultimate frisbee you pass the frisbee to your teammates and try to score a touchdown.  You can run unlimitedly when you don’t have the frisbee, but you...
How to change pain into personal power.

How to change pain into personal power.

Have you ever experienced, or are you currently experiencing overwhelming emotional pain or difficulty?   I know I have, actually, I spend a decent amount of my life in pain and discomfort.  There have been many times, especially in the last year, I have been so overwhelmed I wanted to quit, I almost didn’t want to go on living any longer.  I felt like I couldn’t handle the pressure, the pain, and the uncertainty.  You know the feeling right?  When you can barely stand life the way it is, when you become overwhelmed with fear of the unknown, or you can’t seem to get over how difficult things are for you, sometimes it feels like the entire world is out to get you.   I have learned a few tricks that have allowed me to turn my personal feelings of pain, discontent, and desperation into a powerful tool that drives me to achieve more and accomplish tasks that I once believed were impossible.  This article will show you how to use the same tricks to greatly increase your happiness, effectiveness, and potential.   I want to start out by showing you a few examples of pain, just to set the context for what I am about to tell you.     Example 1:  Weightlifting: when you lift weights it is hard, uncomfortable, and many times painful; if you stay consistent and continue to push through the difficult workouts, eventually your body will change for the better and you will become healthier and usually look better too.   Example 2: Starting your own business: when you start your own business,...
The power of reframing- How you can turn trash into treasure.

The power of reframing- How you can turn trash into treasure.

I have written extensively about the power of perception and how it greatly affects our lives. (belief, positive thinking) It is easy to see how perception and belief can greatly affect: how we respond to hardship, how we view the world, our levels of happiness and success, and our relationships with others, but how do we learn to identify our beliefs, how do we find negative views that we hold and change them into something more positive?  The power over our beliefs comes from a simple technique called reframing.   Reframing is the process of taking a situation and placing it into another “frame” of view.  To put it simply, you choose a viewpoint different than the one you are currently using to view a situation and view it from that new point of view.   An example of reframing could be: imagine you were just laid off from your job, you will be getting a small amount of unemployment but nowhere near what you need to live off of.  It is very difficult to find work in your profession and you are terrified at the prospects of being broke and possibly even losing your home.  I have already set the current frame for you.  You are out of work, you might go broke, and it’s hard to find another job- from this standpoint your situation is pretty bleak-…but lets reframe the same situation into something different.   You ask yourself “What about this situation can I be grateful for?”, and “How can I use this setback as an OPPORTUNITY to get ahead in life?”.   Just a few...
