What makes successful people so successful? Is it their sickening work ethic, their obsession with results, or an abnormal thought process that makes them so able to do want they want in life and create success? Many traits contribute to and make up success, but I have thrown together a short list of 5 traits that are present in ALL successful people. Some traits may come and go, but if you truly want to become (and stay) a success, you will need to develop these 5 traits to keep up with an ever changing world.
Before I begin, I just want to mention that success is highly relative. Is a man a success if he makes a million dollars while neglecting his family and friends? Is a person a success if they get money, fame, accomplish a goal, or win an olympic game? Only you can define success, so figuring out what your success looks like is the first step to getting the success you want in life.
- Successful people embrace uncertainty.
Successful people know that the world is a crazy place, so they don’t focus on what happens to them, but rather, they focus on how they react to what happens. Some successful people have faith in a higher power or being, some have faith in themselves, and others just focus on what they are doing and they ignore everything else, but if you truly want to be a success, you are going to have to accept that no matter how hard you try to, you can’t control everything. EVERYTHING in life will come and go, you must be able to harvest your success even in the leanest of times.
- Successful people focus on improvement and improving.
Most successful people focus way more on progress than they do results, while others focus solely on results and use their performance to motivate them into action each day. Regardless of your outlook, if you want to find your own success, you will need make improvements over time or you will get left behind eventually. People and businesses that are successful must constantly ask “Where can I improve”, “How can I become better”, “How can I do my job better or differently to develop new skills?”. Questions like these fuel improvement, and successful people may be watching for feedback from the world so that they can improve, but they are also turning that feedback inwards to grow and evolve as people.
- Successful people Ignore or eliminate fear.
This kind of goes along with embracing uncertainty, but people who become and maintain successful lives always find a way to deal with fear: fear of failure, fear of the unknown, or even fear of success, all of these fears must be dealt with to achieve success. Fear will hold you back from everything you want in life, and at some point you must become fed up with fear and just let it go completely Some people drown it out with positivity, some people just focus on making progress each day, some people focus on past success, and some people are just naturally a little crazy or have nothing to lose. If you want to be a success, you must first kick fear to the curb.
- Successful people follow their heart.
Successful people spend the majority of their time following their heart and doing what they want on life. Motivators are different for all kinds of people: money, family, giving back, or simply to keep a promise can all be powerful motivating factors that give successful people some of their edge. For whatever reason, successful people let go of everything else, and they follow the little voice that is inside of them. You will have to do the same if success is what you are after.
- Successful people have focus and vision for what they want in life, and they go after it.
Successful people can achieve success, because they know what they want and they follow their heart to get it. Successful people have a clear vision of what they want their future to look like and hold for them, and they pursue it relentlessly. Highly successful people are often neurotic, driven, and borderline obsessed with getting what they want in life, and often the difference between insanity and reason is whether they get it or not. Many people thought the Wright brothers were crazy for trying to fly, until they flew, then they became heroes. Successful people have their own ideas of what is possible over time, and when they see a vision of the future, they do everything in their power to make it happen. No one achieves success sitting on the couch eating chips, so get up and go!
All of these qualities are present in successful people; they may look different for different people, and they may have different ways of displaying these characteristics, but if you look hard enough, you will always see them there. Embrace uncertainty, focus on improvement, eliminate fear, follow your heart, figure out what you and go after it, these traits make up the foundation for success, we can all do better by implementing these things into our own lives.
